KOAN Assessment

When we analyze people’s behavior, we come across similar contradictions. That’s one reason why this term appealed so strongly to us when we sought to name our personality assessment instrument.

Koan is a term taken from Zen Buddhism. It is an abstract paradoxical riddle which monks use to stimulate students to grasp life. A question that cannot be answered using conventional logic.

Even when you are trying to understand people, you never stop learning. New light is always shed on their behavior, on what they have to say, or on their motives from a new angle.

The second reason why we are so attracted by the concept behind the term ‘koan’ is because it encapsulates life-long learning. Every time you think you have fathomed a koan’s meaning, you are given a new one to contemplate. In a similar vein, during the study and analysis of individual people, each perspective you adopt sheds new light on their behavior, utterances and motives. A student of humanity never stops learning.

In the contemplation of koans, the main focus lies on exchanging and increasing knowledge and insight. The student learns from the teacher – as does the teacher from the student. People learn from one another’s actions and utterances, and the feedback they inspire. This, in other words, forms a third reason to name our instrument after this concept.

Whenever one thinks that one has unlocked a KOAN, a new Koan is generated.
